As promised, IZOD IndyCar issued an updated status report on the team’s engine situations at the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. Each car is allowed five engines for the 2013 season – (Chevy IndyCar twin turbo-charged V6 or Honda single turbo-charged Honda H113R). The engines are to go 2000 miles before being replaced. Any engine changes before the 2000 miles is considered ‘unapproved’ whether it be for mechanical problems, or simply refreshing. The penalty is a loss of ten grid starting position for the race of the weekend. The one exception on the penalty is this Indy 500 weekend, when the grid position penalty will be served at the next race, which is the first of the double-header races in June at The Raceway at Belle Isle Park in Detroit.
The engine status is strictly monitored by IndyCar Technical Officials, including JEFF HORTON, Director of Engineering, and TREVOR KNOWLES, Director of Engine Development. They work in close collaboration with the engine manufacturers to monitor the status of the sealed engines.
