The weather was cloudy and getting cool for Day Two of the Armor All Gold Coast 600 at Surfer’s Paradise. But the track action was hot.

Winner JAMIE WHINCUP/No.88 Team Vodafone Holden and Guest International driver, SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS of France, each won a surfboard so they can cool off.

The four other podium drivers also received surfboards.

Finishing second were WILL DAVISON & MIKA SALO of Finland/No.6 Trading Post FPR Ford, followed by MARK WINTERBOTTOM & RICHARD LYONS of Ireland/No.5 Orrcon Steel FPR Ford.

Fourth and fifth finishers were JAMES MOFFAT & JOEY HAND of California/No.18 Jim Beam Racing Ford and FABIAN COULTHARD & PATRICK LONG of California/No.61 Bundaberg Holden.

Bourdais started on pole and kept the lead until the driver change pitstop. The lead changed hands but Whincup regained and went on to win.

This year’s circuit’s ‘footprint’ was reconfigured to give back 40 percent of the space to the community. It changed the track, now 1.839 miles/2.96 km long, “designed to create more passing and closer, more exciting racing.”

The Safety car led three times for eight laps, all Bollard-related.

Sunday morning the V8’s qualify for the afternoon race, and there will be no Top Ten Shootout.

Sunday’s race is shown live in the USA on SPEED TV Saturday 22 October 2011 at 11ET/8PT.
