The sun is out at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the skies are clear and there is a stiff cold breeze bringing the temperatures down to 48 degrees F. Sunday is the second day of qualifying for the 2009 Indianapolis 500. The first eleven drivers have qualified, and Sunday it’s all about the second third of the field – the next eleven cars. At Indy, it’s the cars which qualify, no matter who is in the driver’s seat. If a driver other than the race day driver qualifies the car, that car must start at the back of the pack for the race. Rules is rules.
Two drivers who have a backup car listed on the Entry List are only shown on the Sunday Qualifying Order in primary cars: JUSTIN WILSON/No.18 Dale Coyne Racing and JOHN ANDRETTI/No.43 Richard Petty Motorsports Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.
There are 17 drivers going for 11 spots Sunday.
Indy Racing League doesn’t take any chances. There is no thirteenth position in the Qualifying Order for Sunday.
